Your last will and testament handles the legal and financial aspects of estate planning—who gets what assets, guardianship of minor children, and asset distribution. An emotional will complements this by delivering personal messages, values, life lessons, and emotional support to your loved ones. Together, they provide complete estate planning that addresses both practical and emotional needs.
Complete estate planning should include: last will and testament, trusts, life insurance, healthcare directives, digital asset planning, and emotional legacy messages. While your attorney handles the legal documents, Potter's Messages handles the emotional legacy that will truly matter to your family.
Absolutely! In fact, it's recommended to have both. Your last will and testament is essential for legal estate planning, but it can't convey your love, share your wisdom, or provide comfort during difficult times. An emotional will fills this gap and completes your estate planning.
Our death verification process involves multiple checks. First, we issue a membership card for your wallet/purse. Additionally, a "Letter of Authorization" is provided to store with important documents, such as an Insurance Policy or attached to a Will. Clear instructions for a swift reporting process are outlined on both. If a member's passing is reported, we conduct a state and national death registry lookup. If a match is found, messages will be delivered promptly and in accordance with your wishes.
Our terms of service state that we will make all reasonable efforts to deliver your messages. Including the engagement of investigators if needed to locate contacts. However, the delivery is highly dependent on the accuracy of the contact information you provide.
Be confident in the delivery of your messages by ensuring accurate information, including recipients' email/phone numbers. The combination of recipient and custodian details is all we need to fulfill your message delivery.
Once we have completed the confirmation process and we have validated your passing we will release your messages as you have directed. Typically, this is 3-4 weeks after a death. This aligns well with the stages of grief and is the ideal time to receive a message. We do offer immediate release when using a Organization Administrator or through the Named Custodian. Please contact Support for more details.
Your recipients will receive a unique link via email or SMS/text that will allow them to stream the message and/or download the message to keep for as long as they wish.
The custodian is a trusted source. A spouse or family member for example. It’s up to you to engage them and inform them of your wish. If a custodian informs us of your passing, we will immediately rush the verification and release the messages ASAP. This is ideal if you wish to have your message presented at your service.
